[Brussels, 31 May 2019] On the 9th and 10th of May 2019, we gathered in Helsinki, Finland, a group of more than 20 enthusiastic participants and seven experts for the first Capacity Building seminar on Gender budgeting, as part of our project Channelling Resources to Women’s Rights in Europe.
The purpose of this two-day seminar was to demystify gender budgeting and build the capacity of our members in this area. And so, the participants had the opportunity to learn from experts working on gender budgeting across Europe.
Participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to learn from other countries and the experience of other member organisations. Participants became more confident in building the case for gender budgeting thanks to the practical examples.
On example of these practical examples is the case of Portugal. Ana Sofia Fernandes, Vice-president of EWL and Secretary-General of the Portuguese Platform for Women’s Rights, presented their pilot project on gender budgeting with the Government of Portugal. They are working with selected ministries and they are looking at a series of policies from a gender lens, such as minimum salary, parental leave and active employment measures.
This seminar is part of our efforts to ensure that public budgets responds to the needs of women and girls in Europe and that they appropriately resource women’s rights.
