European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva signs Joint Declaration on parity democracy
[Brussels, 21 February 2014] European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, responsible for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, signed this week the Joint Declaration of the 50/50 Campaign. She thereby expressed her support for the demands of the European Women’s Lobby: the equal representation of women from diverse backgrounds in all EU institutions. The 50/50 Campaign “No Modern European Democracy without Gender Equality”, supported by a cross-party Alliance of a Core Group of MEP’s, aims to raise awareness for the lack of equal representation of women in decision-making positions and demands all relevant stakeholders to take concrete steps in order to increase women’s participation ahead of the upcoming European elections.
Commissioner Georgieva also expressed her support for the EWL mentoring programme as a great measure to ensure not only parity but also diversity in European political life.
An article on Commissioner Georgieva’s personal experiences and commitment for women’s rights and gender equality and a filmed interview will follow on our website and in the next newsletter.
