(Brussels, 18 October 2013) Three years have passed since the European Parliament adopted its position on the directive for which no formal response has been received from the Council. The Maternity Leave Directive is to be adopted through the co-decision procedure which requires two parties to negotiate and agree namely the European Parliament and the European Council.
With just less than a year before the May 2014 European Parliament elections, the EWL urges the Council to show its commitment to gender equality, to no longer stall the negotiations, to put the Maternity Leave Directive back on its agenda and to provide a formal response to enable the adoption of the revised Directive before the end of the mandate of the current European Parliament.
