Brigitte Triems presents EWL and NGO Coalition recommendations for EY2012 on Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations

[Brussels, 03 May 2011] On the ocasion of the 3rd European Day of Solidarity between Generations on Friday 29 April, EWL President Brigittte Triems attended a major EU conference in preparation of the upcoming European Year 2012 on Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. Key stakeholders, such as member states, regional and local authorities, social partners and civil society organisations were invited.

The EWL, a member of the NGO coalition for the year, is pressing for the inclusion of a strong gender dimension in all the activities of the year. Intervening at the conference, Brigitte Triems drew attention to the importance of gender equality in European policies designed to address the challenges of an ageing population, echoing the messages of a Press Release issed by the EWL on the eve of the Day (Promotion of gender equality key to effective EU strategy on Active Ageing, says EWL on occasion of 3rd European Day of Solidarity between Generations).

Together with Francesco Briganti (AEIP), Laura Jones (Eurodiaconia), John Consedine (Euroheartnet) the president of EWL put forward the recommendations of the Coalition of EU NGO networks, as presented in a joint brochure launched by the coalition at the event (2012 - Everyone has a role to play!).

Promoting active ageing and solidarity between generations is a worthy and necessary enterprise for the EU’, commented Brigitte Triems, EWL President. ‘We look forward to seeing the development of a fair and sustainable social model which takes into account the rights and needs of all generations and, crucially, of women and men alike, in order to make this vision a reality.’

’Staying active as we grow older is key to tackling the challenge of demographic ageing but if the European Union is to reach its goals more comprehensive strategies to combat inequalities between women and men are needed.’
