EWL Members WAGGGS plan Twitter take over for day of the girl child

(Brussels 10 October 2013) European Week of Action for Girls 2013 - Making the invisible visible: Girls as drivers of change

Girl Guide to take over UN Women’s Twitter accounts on 11 October

Did you know half of the world’s population, over 3.5 billion people, is under 25? And half again are girls and young women? This is a powerful force of energy, capacity, innovation and knowledge, but which still remains largely untapped. Whether it is poverty, hunger, unemployment, conflicts, HIV/AIDS or climate change, girls and young women, lacking influence over decision-making processes that affect their lives, are particularly vulnerable, as well as facing double discrimination of gender and age.

For millions of girls worldwide, their dreams, ambitions and plans shatter only because they are girls. Yet, girls and young women are important agents of change, and have the right to live free of violence and discrimination, where good education and decent job prospects are not distant dreams.

If girls are empowered to participate in decision-making, in the life of their communities and in economic, civic and political life, everyone stands to benefit.

The 2nd International Day of the Girl on 11th October launches the European Week of Action for Girls 2013, which takes place from 11-18 October under the official patronage of the European Parliament. Events during the week will highlight girls’ potential as powerful drivers of change, calling on the EU to promote and protect girls’ rights worldwide by ensuring they are visible in EU policies and programming.

WAGGGS has called on Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the world to take the lead on 11 October to create the world we want for girls. You can find out more information about the European Week of Action for Girls, organized by Plan EU with the support of other civil society organizations such as WAGGGS here.

If you would like to take part in the European Week of Action for Girls, join the #GenderJam which will take place from 9am CET on 11 October on Twitter. Use the hashtags #GenderJam, #EWAG13 and @Europe Region to share what the International Day of the Girl means to you and how Girl Guides and Girl Scouts will be celebrating the day.
