France: EWL members take part in 57th Commission on the Status of Women in the UN in New York
[CLEF, Paris, 04 March 2013] The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby (CLEF) and many of its association members will be presented at the 57th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in the UN in New York from March 4 through 15.
The chosen theme for the work during this session of CSW is the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.
CLEF is organizing on March 7, in the framework of parallel events, a workshop entitled: ‘Rape, a crime against humanity. Stop the impunity’. The objective will be to go beyond a simple denunciation of this extreme yet seemingly invisible crime that too often goes unpunished, both in France and Europe, as well as the rest of the world. It will also reaffirm the CLEF’s commitment to the universality of women’s rights, to defending their sexual and reproductive rights, and to the struggle against all forms of violence to which women are subjected.
CLEF has also written a statement on prostitution. A major theme in the struggle against inequality between women and men and against violence toward women, prostitution constitutes a violation of human rights.
Apart from regular meetings with NGOs defending women’s rights worldwide, the representatives from CLEF, in the company of Anne Hidalgo, first deputy mayor for the Mayor of Paris and the President of the Standing Committee for Gender Equality of the Association of the Mayors of the World, will meet with Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women.
The CLEF’s delegation will also be presented at the events in which the Minister of Women’s Rights, Najat Vallaud Belkacem, will be participating on March 4 and 5.
