International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2013
(Brussels, 17 October, 2013) The EWL’s Mary Collins, Social and Economic Policy Officer spoke of the female face of poverty in Europe yesterday in the context of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In response to the Commission proposal on the "Social Dimension of the EMU" a discussion was hosted by the Greens European free Alliance in the European parliament.
Poverty and social exclusion severely impede upon women’s empowerment and economic independence, preventing them from participating in all areas of life.
Austerity measures have caused much hardship across Europe, contributing among other things to a widening gender pay gap in pensions, cuts to education and care services, and forcing women back into stereotypical gender roles while putting them at greater risk for poverty and male violence.
