[Brussels, 18 May 2012] Ahead of the European Year on Citizenship 2013, the European Commission has launched a public consultation: “EU citizens: your rights, your future” where all EU citizens get a chance to voice their opinions on the European Union and their rights as citizens. This public consultation will be open until 09 September 2012 and the views expressed during this time will help the European Union prepare a citizenship report for the Year 2013. The European Commission issued a first citizenship report in 2010 informing EU citizens of their rights as well as issuing 25 guidelines for how life of EU citizens can be improved. In 2013, the European Year of Citizens, a similar second report will be published.
The main questions to be addressed are:
- Have you ever encountered difficulties moving to another EU country?
- Have you ever had problems when trying to shop online from another EU country?
- In what kind of Union would you like to live in 2020?

The EWL warmly welcomes the European Year of Citizens initiated by Commission’s Vice-President Vivianne Reding as an opportunity to enhance equality between women and men in access to democratic decision-making, the most basic right confered by citizenship. The EWL stresses the need to increase the number of women in decision-making also at the EU level. Only one-third of Commissioners and 35% of Members of the European Parliament are women.
