(London, 22 July 2014) On 22 July, the UK government and UNICEF hosted the first Girl Summit, aimed at mobilising domestic and international efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage (CEFM) within a generation. To get concrete change, the girl Summit has launched a pledge for everyone to support.

Child, early and forced marriage affects millions of girls every year and girls who marry young, have babies while still children, a very risky thing for their reproductive and overall health, and are more likely to be and stay poor.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is an extreme and violent way in which girls are controlled and disempowered. It removes a girl’s right to have control over her own body and it can result in a lifetime of pain and difficulty in childbirth. Many girls are mutilated even in EU countries, and trends suggest at least 30 million girls worldwide will be at risk over the next decade.
Hence, a new package of action and funding to protect millions of girls at home and abroad from female genital mutilation and forced marriage has been announced at the Girl Summit 2014.
