[Brussels, 9 May 2014] Child poverty and social exclusion is one of the major challenges facing the European Union, in the same vein, the financial crisis is increasingly threatening children and their rights. Therefore, in February 2013, as a key part of its Social Investment Package (SIP), the European Union and the European Commission issued a major Recommendation on Investing in children: breaking the cycle of disadvantage.
This puts forward a common European Framework that is expected to help Member States strengthen synergies across relevant policy areas as well as review national policies and learn from other member states experiences.
The final reports from the EU Network of Independent Experts on Social Inclusion, the synthesis report and the country reports for the 28 Member States on implementing the Commission Recommendation Investing in Children: Breaking the cycle of disadvantage are now available on line.
The country reports prepared by the national experts are intended to assist the Commission and Member States in the implementation of the Recommendation and inform its monitoring. They set out what the Network experts see as the priorities for action in each Member State. The Synthesis Report, which has been produced by the Network Core Team (NCT) on the basis of the 28 independent experts’ reports, brings together the main findings of the country analyses and draws on these and the NCT’s overall assessment to put forward a series of concrete suggestions for advancing the implementation of the Recommendation at both national and EU levels.
This is particularly in line with the European Semester and the cooperation in the social area between the EU countries and the European Commission.
The European Women’s Lobby wrote an adjustment letter on the Recommendation before it was first published in 2013 and will encourage members to follow the national implementation process of the Recommendation.
