[Valetta, 18 January 2011] At the 2010 Annual General Meeting of EWL national member organisation the Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations (MCWO), Renee Laiviera was elected the new chairperson.
Ms Laiviera takes over the helm from Anna Borg who has served her mandatory 4-year term with great dedication and enthusiasm and in no small way brought greater visibility to the Confederation.
The MCWO is an umbrella organisation that represents 15 local member organisations which collectively have 24,000 female members. The MCWO is a full member of the Brussels based European Women’s Lobby (EWL).
Ms Laiviera is well recognized for her contribution towards the causes of gender equality, the rights of women and the elimination of Violence Against Women. In the past she has held positions within the Public Service where she was responsible for the gender equality portfolio. Ms Laiviera has also served on commissions and committees working on comparable areas of concern.
Other members elected to the executive board are: Maria Bartolo Galea, Secretary General; Kate Bonello Sullivan, Public Relations; Mariella Azzopardi, Treasurer; Second and Third EWL Delegate to the Chairperson, Lorraine Spiteri and Anna Borg respectively. Dr Marceline Naudi has been nominated MCWO’s expert on Violence against Women on the EWL’s Observatory.
