[Brussels, 4 February 2014] In January, the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) contributed to the consultation of the European Commission (EC) on the future of Home Affairs. In its contribution, the EWL focused on three main issues: trafficking in women, violence against women, migration and asylum. The EWL is happy to see its members and partners’s contributions (including of the European Network of Migrant Women, the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Equality Now), and hopes that the European Commission will take all proposals into account in the elaboration of the new agenda for Home Affairs.
To summarise EWL remarks and demands:
- On trafficking in human beings: The EWL and its members expect from the European Commission to address, in the New Agenda for Home Affairs, the root causes to end sexual exploitation and prostitution, which are fueling trafficking in women and girls in and to Europe.
- On violence against women: The EWL is calling on DG Home to fulfil its promise included in the Stockholm Action Plan and elaborate a comprehensive EU strategy to end all forms of violence against women.
- On asylum: It is absolutely necessary in this context that the European Asylum Support Office acts now to support the establishment of an overarching and uniform gender-sensitive asylum system in the EU
- On family reunification: The EWL urges the European Commission to work towards ending the policies establishing dependency between family members, particularly when these might affect migrant women in an adverse manner.
