[Brussels, 07 June 2012] On the occasion of the Alexander Langer award 2012 granted to the Association of Democratic Women (ATFD), the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) joins the Heinrich Böll Stiftung initiative, together with Actions in the Mediterranean (AIM), the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) to celebrate the long standing engagement and commitment of ATFD. ATFD was the first feminist organisation in Tunisia working on equality and citizenship, with a close link to the issue of democracy and the separation between religion and politics. Its work was completely independent of the regime and therefore ATFD experienced severe repression against its members and activities.
The award will take place in the European Parliament in Brussels on 18 June and a lunch-debate, on 19 June will give an opportunity to further discuss how Tunisian women face the new challenges on their rights in the context following the Arab spring.
On this ocasion, the EWL will present the recommendations resulting from the Exchange meeting organised on 20-23 March with representatives of the AFTD, and other Tunisian and European women activists.
