On 4 July, the EWL policy team attended the European Commission’s consultation with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on the Post-2025 Gender Equality Strategy. This one-day event took place in Brussels and was led by representatives from the Gender Equality Unit of DG Justice and Consumers (DG JUST).
Following introductory remarks, participants joined group discussions to exchange views on key challenges and policy gaps, priority actions, gender mainstreaming, and intersectionality. Plenary sessions captured the main takeaways from the smaller group discussions.
Key points raised included:
- The need to ensure the proper transposition and effective implementation of the current framework to combat gender-based violence.
- The need for a legal definition of intersectionality and genuine gender mainstreaming among all EU policies.
- The need to tackle cyberviolence and online discrimination.
- The importance of interoperability across equality legislative tools.
- Greater emphasis on the care economy, health policies and tackling women’s poverty.
- Concerns about funding for civil society organisations (CSOs).
Overall, participants collectively called upon the Commission to be bold and ambitious while drafting the Strategy highlighting that we still have a long way to go before achieving gender equality.
