Urgent Action Required – Support to women students and professors protesting against corruption and for the rule of law in Serbia
Dear European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
Dear European Parliament President Roberta Metsola
Dear European Council President António Costa
Dear European High Representative Kaja Kallas
On behalf of the European Women’s Lobby (EWL), the largest umbrella organisation of women’s NGOs in the European Union, we are writing to you following our motion adopted at our General Assembly regarding the situation of women students and professors protesting against corruption and the rule of law in Serbia.
We call on you to unequivocally support all protesters’ requests, prevent the Serbian regime from targeting women and all protesters, and protect peaceful protesters’ human rights in Serbia.
Serbia has the status of an EU candidate country; it is a member of the Council of Europe and the OSCE.The Serbian constitution obliges the authorities [to]:
“Article 16, para 2: Generally accepted rules of international law and ratified international treaties shall be an integral part of the legal system in the Republic of Serbia and applied directly”.
Women students and professors protesting against corruption and the rule of law in Serbia believe in the EU, trust European Political Leaders and need your support.
We, the European Women’s Lobby, trust that you will take this matter very seriously and that you will request further explanations from the Serbian authorities to guarantee the rule of law.
Yours Sincerely,
Dina Loghin, EWL President
Mary Collins, EWL Secretary General
