Last week, the European Commission unveiled its proposed long-term budget, but where do women stand?
The next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028-2034) is a historic opportunity to invest in gender equality, peace, and social justice. Yet once again, there are no guarantees that women and girls will be prioritised.
EWL welcomes the European Commission’s efforts for simpler, focused, and responsive budget that addresses the EU values, priorities and key challenges. We look with hope and attention towards the next financial framework, as we expect this budget to reflect the lessons learnt from RFF and the previous multiannual financial frame.
Women & Peace must be a budget line and that is different that a budget line only on Defence. Women must have a seat on the table when peace is discussed and when our shared future is shaped!
The EU budget proposal for 2028-2034 so far offers no guarantees on how much of this funding will reach girls and women. Even though gender budgeting is not a core EU value, it is the practical mechanism to implement the core value of gender equality so we move closer towards an Equal Europe.
The next MFF must address the backlash against women’s rights and leave no doubt: the only way forward is towards a Feminist Europe! In the turbulent times we live in this next MFF is a strategic opportunity for the EU to lead by example.
