Chairwoman of the EP Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Eva-Britt Svensson (GUE/NGL) resigns
[European Parliament, Brussels, 30 August 2011] Long-standing Swedish MEP and Chairwoman of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Eva-Britt Svensson (GUE/NGL) resigns due to health reasons from the European Parliament as from 1st September 2011.
Eva-Britt Svensson is well-known for her strong commitment and personal dedication for women’s rights and is responsible for well received European Parliament’s resolutions such as on priorities and outline of a new EU policy framework to fight violence against women and on how marketing and advertising affect equality between women and men. She was elected Chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality on 16 July 2009 and had previously also served as Vice-Chair of the committee.
During a committee meeting on Tuesday, 30 August, Vice-Chair Edite Estrela (S-D, PT) warmly thanked, on behalf of the Members of the Women’s Rights Committee, Eva-Britt Svensson for her strenuous endeavours in promoting women’s rights as well as for the great contribution she made to the work of the committee, both as an individual Member and as Chairwoman, and wished her swift recovery.
