Croatia - EWL members organise V-Day event with women experiencing disabilities
[Brussels, 13 April 2011] The Centre for Women’s Studies Zagreb, a member of the Women’s Network Croatia, in cooperation with the Croatian Union of Associations of Persons with disabilities (SOIH), is organising V-Day 2011 on the theme of ‘Without Barriers - STOP violence against women with disabilities’. A special performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues with women with disabilities, activists, politicians and artists will be held on 20 April 20 2011 at 19:00 in the new Museum of Contemporary Arts in Zagreb.
The performance will be translated into sign language and all of the proceedings will go to the SOS help-line against violence against women with disabilities.
By organizing a V-Day event, the Centre for Women’s Studies whishes to promote a specific concept of womens’ cooperation and solidarity with women with disabilities. Through workshops and the joint performance of the powerful play ‘The Vagina Monologues’, we will question the manner on which disabled women deal with barriers they face, as well as the State’s/City’s relation toward women with disabilities.
Thus, the aim of this V-Day event is to raise public awareness as to the everyday discrimination women face due to their disabilities, including their experience with all forms of violence, but also to empower women with disabilities to express their sexuality and desires and participate in city’s cultural life ‘without barriers’.
