EWL to address trafficking and prostitution in ARETUSA seminar on Women’s citizenship rights

(Brussels, 21 May 2013) Next Tuesday 2013, the European Women’s Lobby will speak at the Aretusa event about women’s citizenship rights. The seminar, entitled "Addressing women’s rights within the 2013 European Year of Citizens context" will focus on the issues of violence against women, trafficking in women, and sexual exploitation, in the framework of the debates on citizenship and human rights.

ARETUSAis a platform that aims to develop the capacity of NGOs to translate the principle of equality of women and men into specific measures and initiatives aiming at addressing the violation of women’s rights. ARETUSA works to ensure effective protection against any act of discrimination and violence, at guaranteeing empowerment and advancement of women in political, economic and social life.

Several Members of the European Parliament will also contribute to the discussion, including Ms Cecilia Wikström, who has signed the Brussels’ Call ’Together for a Europe free from prostitution’. The EWL welcomes the seminar which will be a key opportunity to highlight the urgency to combat violence against women and prostitution in order to reach equality and make women’s citizens’ rights a reality in the EU.
