Spain - New campaign raises awareness on effects of violence against women
[Brussels, 20 November 2012] The members of the EWL in Spain have launched a new campaign highlighting the wider family impact of pervasive violence against women. “YOU AND YOUR DAUGHTERS AND SONS SUFFER VIOLENCE, don’t allow it” was presented at the beginning of November in Cordoba by the Plataforma Andaluza de Apoyo al Lobby Europeo de Mujeres in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality. This campaign is particularly addressed to women victims of violence but also the media, politicians, unions and the general public. This scourge has led to more than 35 women dead this year in Spain and directly affects children.
The Plataforma Andaluza de Apoyo al Lobby Europeo de Mujeres calls for a different statistic methodology: data collected on Violence against Women should be collected in a way that takes account violence repercussions on children.
This campaign is being carried out in Andalusia, Madrid and Extremadura through the mailing of posters, radio spots, social networks and other means.
“We persistently find out that women murders by partners and former partners continue to be treated as "deaths" and occupy only small spaces in the newspapers. Children who are victims of beatings, verbal and sexual abuse aren’t mentioned. If it had been 35 men to be killed in a year, instead of women, the country would undoubtedly feel paralyzed. In Spain, though, violence and murders of women and their children continue to be considered as ‘events’”, concludes Rafaela Pastor (President of the Plataforma Andaluza para el Lobby Europeo de Mujeres).
