  On 1 March 2011 the Court of Justice of the European Union (EUCJ) decided Case C-236/09; a preliminary reference case dealing with equal treatment in the insurance industry.   EU calls for gender balance on company boards

  The EU has indicated it could press for legally binding quotas to increase the number of women on company boards.
  In a joint article for the Parliament Magazine, commission vice-president for justice Viviane Reding and parliament president Jerzy Buzek said quotas could help "shatter the glass ceiling" for women.

  Mixed reaction to ECJ ruling on women’s car insurance

  The insurance industry condemned a landmark European court ruling that insurers cannot charge different premiums to men and women because of their gender. The ECJ decision means that women can no longer be charged lower car insurance premiums than men, and the cost of buying a pensions annuity will change.
