Turkey - Women left unprotected from violence, says Human Rights Watch

Gaps in law, police response, put urgently needed help out of reach

[Human Rights Watch, Brussels, 10 May 2011] Turkey’s flawed family violence protection system leaves women and girls across the country unprotected against domestic abuse, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Life-saving protections, including court-issued protection orders and emergency shelters, are not available for many abuse victims because of gaps in the law and enforcement failures.

Female scriptwriters share 2011 MEDIA European Talent Prize

[European Commission, Brussels, 10 May 2011] Scriptwriters Virág Zomborácz (Hungary) and Hanna Sköld (Sweden) will share this year’s MEDIA European Talent Prize for their film scripts for Afterlife and Granny’s Dancing on the Table. Pension discrimination between same-sex civil partnership and married couples illegal, says European Court of Justice

[Brussels, 11 May 2011] The Court of Justice of the European Union stated that a supplementary retirement pension paid to a partner in a civil partnership, which is lower than that granted in a marriage, may constitute discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation.
In its judgment in the case C-147/08, the Court of Justice of the European Union made a step further in the protection of social rights and non discrimination.

France - Maternity leave to count towards pension allocations

[Brussels, 18 April 2011] In France, maternity leave is at last to be included in calculations for pension allocations, according to new legislation published yesterday.
According to the French daily Le Monde, private sector pensions at present differ massively by gender, with women receiving an average of 825 Euros and men 1426 Euros per month.
Henceforth, the daily stipend a mother receives while on maternity leave is to be counted as part of her salary and thus pension contributions. (...) Read more
